The Hallways of Hope: Discovery Students Share MLK-Inspired Artwork
Martin Luther King Jr Celebrations
Discovery Elementary students learn and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in many ways. Not only do our classroom teachers use ISD resources to honor this Washington State Civic Observance, our school librarian, Mrs. Gage teaches a lesson to each class to further their understanding of temperance and good citizenship.
During Library time, Mrs. Gage has presented the following lessons on his life & work
- Kindergarten- Students listen to Lisbeth Kaiser read her book “Who Was Martin Luther King Jr”
- First Grade classes watch a Brain Pop video on Martin Luther King Jr.
- Second Grade classes watched a Kid President YouTube video discussing MLK Jr
- Third Grade students watched a read aloud by author Brad Meltzer “I am Martin Luther King Jr”
- Fourth Grade watches the Scholastic “Dr Martin Luther King Jr, a Leader Hero
- Fifth Grade watches his speech on YouTube which is very inspiring.
Mrs. Gage takes these lessons further by taking this moment to teach our students what an “Activist” is. Outside the Library, she displays the word and its definition and then continues to talk to the students about what it involves in being an activist in their daily life. She sets up a table with books the students can check out about other activists who have made a difference in our world.
As you walk the hallways at Discovery you will see artwork done by our students that share how they can incorporate his values into their lives. Here are a few examples.
